The Drama League was set to honor the five-time Tony Award® winning McNally with the organization’s lifetime achievement award – “The Unique Contribution to Theater Award”  at this year’s Drama League Awards. However, because of McNally’s unfortunate passing on March 24, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19 and New York City’s guidelines against large gatherings, The Drama League has had to make changes to their annual awards nomination ceremony this year.

The 86th Annual Awards Celebration has now become a virtual tribute and fundraiser titled The Gratitude Awards. During this unique online event, the nominees for the 86th Artistic Awards Nominations will be announced together with the presentation of the nominees for The Gratitude Awards, and additional award honors bestowed to Marianne Elliott as the recipient of The Founders Award for Excellence in Directing, and James Lapine will be honored with The Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award.

The Unique Contribution to Theater Award for Terrence McNally will be accepted by McNally’s partner, Tom Kirdahy, and presented by filmmakers Jeff Kauffman and Marcia Ross who also directed the acclaimed documentary – TERRENCE MCNALLY: EVERY ACT OF LIFE. The special McNally tribute short film also directed by Kauffman and Ross will be presented during the ceremony.

The Gratitude Awards, is a one-night event and virtual fundraiser set to air on Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 pm ET on Facebook Live and Youtube. Nominations for The Drama League’s 86th Annual Artistic Awards will also be presented during The Gratitude Awards program by Beetlejuice’s Alex Brightman and Leslie Rodriguez Krizter. All shows that have premiered up until March 11, 2020, are eligible for nomination.

The Drama League Awards, which recognizes outstanding achievements on and off-Broadway, is a tradition the Drama League has been honored to provide since 1935. This year, as the world and its theater community face unique challenges, its need for celebration is different. The traditional Drama League awards process was therefore delayed due to the ongoing citywide response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now folded into The Gratitude Awards.

The Gratitude Awards will be free to stream thanks to the generosity of sponsors BroadwayHD   (founded by Bonnie Comley & Stewart F. Lane), Iris Smith, Joe and Lauren Pizza / Sceneworks, Una Jackman / Talu Productions & Jay Alix / Lakeview Productions. All proceeds raised during the program will go towards The Ghost Light Campaign, which supports our 2020-2021 cohort of Directing Fellows & Residents, New Visions / New Voices after-school directing mentorship program for NYC high school students, as well as a portion allocated directly to our micro re-grant program, the Directors Emergency Relief Fund.
